Abstract

[Also in Group XXXI] A motor vehicle wheel braking mechanism includes a fan rotor coupled to the wheel by a gear train of ratio greater than unity, ducting being provided between the fan and the braking mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, a wheel 9 having tyres 10 is coupled to a brake drum 8 mounted for rotation on a sleeve 5 supported by bearings 6 on the axle casing 7. The drive from the half-shaft 1 is transmitted through a sun-Wheel 2, planets 3 and a planet-carrier 4 to the hub 5, the planets 5 also engaging a toothed ring 3A which is also engaged by a toothed ring 3B connected to the casing 7. The fan rotor 11 is connected at 12 to the half-shaft 1 and a duct 13 is provided to direct air to or from the brake drum 8 according to the set of the blades. In Fig. 2, a fixed stub-shaft 14 carries a wheel 19 by means of a hub and bearings 20. A sun pinion is mounted on the shaft 14 and meshes with planets 17 carried by a carrier 18 attached to the wheel. The pinions 17 also mesh with a toothed annulus 17A fixed to the shaft 14. The sun 16 is rigid with a fan rotor 22, the blades 23 of which are located in a shroud 24 and direct air in or out, according to their setting, of a duct 25 and past a brake disc 21 rigid with the wheel hub. Because the planet carrier 18 rotates with the wheel, the pinion 16 and rotor 22 rotate at a greater speed.
