Abstract

16-Hydroxy steroids of the general formula <FORM:0902029/IV (b)/1> and the corresponding 1-dehydro compounds (wherein X is H, Cl, or F and X1 is Cl or F, Y is keto or hydrogen and a b -hydroxyl group) are prepared by incubation (under aerobic conditions) of a culture of Streptomyces roseochromogenus with the corresponding 16-unsubstituted steroid. Examples detail the preparation of 6a -fluoro- and 6a -chloro-16a -nydroxy derivatives of cortisone, hydrocortisone, prednisone and prednisolone together with the 9a -fluoro- and chloro-derivatives.
