Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0900561/IV (b)/1> where in X, X1, X11 and X111 are hydrogen or chlorine atoms or alkoxy radicals, one substituent being an alkoxy radical and at least two being a chlorine atom, or an amine or alkali metal salt thereof, subject to the proviso that when X or X111 is a chlorine atom, X1 and X11 cannot both be a methoxy group. The compounds are used in herbicidal compositions (see Group VI). In an example 2:3:5:6-tetrachlorobenzoic acid was refluxed with a solution of sodium in n-butanol until one molar equivalent of chloride ion had been evolved, the butanol removed by steam distillation and the residue acidified to give trichloron-butoxy-benzoic acid. The following compounds, derived from the corresponding tri-or tetra-chlorobenzoic acids, are specified:-methoxy-, ethoxy-, 2-ethoxyethoxy- and n-butoxy-dichlorobenzoic acids and ethoxy-, n- and iso-propoxy-, sec-butoxy-, amyloxy- and 2-ethoxyethoxy-trichlorobenzoic acids.ALSO:The invention comprises herbicidal compositions containing a compound of formula <FORM:0900561/VI/1> wherein X, X1, X11 and X111 are hydrogen or chlorine atoms or alkoxy radicals, one substituent being an alkoxy radical and at least two being chlorine atoms, or an amine or alkali metal salt thereof, subject to the proviso that when X or X111 is a chlorine atom, X1 or X11 cannot both be a methoxy group (see Group IV (b)) and a diluent or carrier. Specified compositions are powders using clay as carrier, solutions in solvents such as benzene, xylene and petroleum, aqueous solutions of the amine or alkali metal salts and aqueous emulsions. Other herbicides such as chlorinated alkyl aryl ureas may also be used in the compositions. In Examples: (1) an aqueous solution of the dimethylamine salt of methoxy-dichlorobenzoic acid is prepared; (2) a solution, p emulsifiable with water, is prepared using ethoxytrichlorobenzoic acid, xylene and a non-ionic polyether emulsifier.
