1416434 2 - Alkylamino - 4 - hydroxypyrimidines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8359/72 Heading C2C Pyrimidines of formula wherein R is H or an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl group, R<SP>1</SP> is H or an alkyl group, R<SP>11</SP> is an alkyl group and R<SP>111</SP> is H or an alkyl group are obtained by adding an N-alkyl- or N,N-dialkyl-guanidine to an ester (e.g. methyl or ethyl) of an acylacetic acid of formula at 80-170‹ C. in a solvent which is an inert hydrocarbon or inert halogenated hydrocarbon (e.g. xylene or monochlorobenzene) in such conditions that any water or alcohol formed is rapidly removed by distillation. The molar ratio of alkylguanidine to acylacetic ester is preferably between 0À8 : 1 and 1À2 : 1 and the alkylguanidine is conveniently added to the ester as a solution or suspension obtained from an alkylguanidine salt and an alkali metal alkoxide or hydroxide in a C 1-6 alcohol or water or mixtures of these. The pyrimidines find use as fungicides and the examples describe the preparation of 5-nbutyl - 2 - ethylamino - 4 - hydroxy - 6 - methylpyrimidine.
