Abstract

An antiknock fluid composition (particularly adapted for use as an additive to hydrocarbon fuel of the gasoline boiling range) contains a cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl compound having the general formula AMn(CO)3, wherein A is a cyclopentadienyl hydrocarbon radical having 5-17 carbon atoms (the radical A being bonded to the manganese atom by means of carbon-to-manganese bonds through carbon atoms comprising the C5 cyclopentadienyl ring), and a gasoline-soluble compound of a Group Va element chosen from phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in amount such that the atom ratio of Group Va element to manganese is from 0,001:1 to 3:1. Compounds of Group Va elements which are mentioned include inorganic phosphorus compounds (e.g. phosphonitrilic dichloride and phosphorous sesquisulphide), esters of acids of trivalent phosphorus (e.g. phosphites, including tri (b -chloroethyl) phosphite, phosphonites and phosphinites), esters of acids of pentavalent phosphorus (e.g. phosphates, including trimethyl thionophosphate, tri (b -chloropropyl) thionophosphate and tri-butoxyethyl phosphate, phosphonates, thiono-phosphonates and phosphinates), organic-substituted phosphines, phosphine oxides and phosphine sulphides, P2S5-treated organic compounds, organic amidophosphates or amidophosphites or their sulphur analogues, organic arsenates, arsenites, antimonates, antimonites, bismuthates or bismuthites, organic substituted arsines, stibines or bismuthines, and glycol complexes of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth acids. The antiknock composition may also contain scavengers, antioxidants, dyes and solvents such as kerosene, toluene or hexane. In examples, the manganese compound is methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, while the Group Va compound is trimethyl phosphate, dimethyl xylyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, phenyl dicresyl phosphate, dixylyl isooctenephosphonate, tripentyl antimonate, triphenyl stibine, tricumenyl stibine, trixylyl stibine, tridecyl arsenate, tributyl arsine, triphenylarsine, trimethyl bismuthine or triphenyl bismuthine.
