Abstract
A liquid hydrocarbon composition having a reduced tendency to permeate cellulose materials, e.g. Manila paper gaskets, contains an organic phosphorus compound P(X)a(XH)b (XR)c(R)d(H)e, where X is oxygen or sulphur; R is a monovalent C1-24 organic radical; a is 0, 1 or 2; b is 0 or 1; c, d are whole numbers from 0 to 5 and c + d is at least 1; e is a whole number from 0 to 4; and Za + b + c + d + e is 3 or 5; and a hydrocarbyl polysiloxane having a hydrocarbyl/silicon ratio of 1.7 to 3 : 1, the ratio by weight of phosphorus compound to polysiloxane being from 10 : 1 to 1000 : 1. Preferably the liquid hydrocarbon contains by weight 0.001 to 1 per cent of the phosphorus compound and 0.00001 to 0.05 per cent of the polysiloxane. The phosphorus compound may be a phosphine, phosphine oxide, phosphorane, phosphite, phosphonite, phosphinite, phosphenite, phosphate, phosphonate, phosphinate, phosphenate or a phosphorane-mono-, di-, tri-, tetr- or pent-oate. Typical examples are pentaphenylphosphorane; dixylyl phosphite; diphenyl cresylphosphonite; diphenylphosphinic acid; ethyl dimethylthiophosphinite; tricresyl, tris (3 : 3 : 5-trimethylcyclohexyl), trifurfuryl and trithienyl phosphates; triamyl thionophosphate propyl dicresyl thiolophosphate; and methyltriethylphosphoranoic acid. The polysiloxanes are either "silicone fluids," i.e. straight-chain linear compounds having terminal silicon atoms to which are attached three hydrocarbyl groups while each of the other silicon atoms bears two hydrocarbyl groups or unbranched cyclic polysiloxanes, or partially condensed silicone resins. In examples relating to gasoline, kerosene and diesel fuels, there are disclosed the combination of dimethylpolysiloxane fluid with tricresyl phosphate, diphenyl cresyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, tris (3 : 5 : 5 trimethylcyclohexyl) phosphine, or tributyl phosphite; methylphenyl polysiloxane fluid, containing 1.5 methyl groups and 0.5 phenyl groups per silicon atom, with di (2-ethylhexyl) 2-ethylhexylphosphonate; and a partially-condensed methyl silicone resin having a methyl/silicon ratio of 1.8 with triphenyl phosphate. A specific gasoline composition to which tricresyl phosphate and a dimethyl polysiloxane are added contains small amounts of tetraethyl lead, N : N1-di-sec. butylparaphenylene diamine, disalicylalpropylene diamine, ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide, and a dye. Reference is made to the addition of the organic phosphorus compounds and the polysiloxanes used in the invention to benzene, naphtha as used in paints and varnishes, Stoddard solvent, and xylene.
