Abstract

A fuel for internal combustion engines comprises hydrocarbons in the gasoline boiling range containing a minor proportion of a tetraalkyl lead and a minor proportion of a mixture of a halohydrocarbon scavenger and up to 0.3 theories of an organic derivative of an oxyacid, a hydride or an oxide of phosphorus, which derivative contains at least one aryl radical attached either directly or through an oxygen atom to the phosphorus atom, the ratio of theories of halohydrocarbon scavenger to theories of the phosphorus compound lying between 3 : 2 and 15 : 1. The halohydrocarbon scavenger may be ethylene dibromide or dichloride, acetylene tetrabromide, hexachloropropylene or the mono- or polyhalo propanes, butanes, pentanes or alkyl benzenes. More than one such compound may be employed. The organic derivatives of phosphorus include the mono- and di-esters of phosphoric and phosphorous acids in which at least one ester group is aryl; the aryl esters of phosphonic, phosphonous, phosphinic and phosphinous acids; aryl phosphonic, phosphonous, phosphinic and phosphinous acids and their alkyl esters; organic substituted phosphines and phosphine oxides containing at least one aryl group, and phosphoaryl compounds of the type R.PO2. Compounds specified are mono- and dicumenyl orthophosphate, the dixylyl phosphites, 2.4. dimethylnaphthalene-phosphonic acid, the diphenyl cresylphosphonites, diphenyl phosphinic acid, ethyl diphenyl phosphite and phospho-benzene. The total amount of scavengers may be between 0.4 and 2.0 theories, preferably 0.9 to 1.2 theories. The phosphorus compound is preferably present in an amount between 0.1 and 0.2 theories. The fuels may also contain corrosion or oxidation inhibitors, such as 2.4. dimethyl-6-t-butylphenol and other alkyl phenols, N.N1-dibutyl-p-phenylene diamine, hydroquinone and phenyl-alphanaphthylamine, and dyes. The Specification also describes compositions for adding to gasolines, comprising the mixture of the two scavengers and tetra alkyl lead. The subject-matter of Specification 708,006 is disclaimed.
