In order to compensate for fluctuations in supply voltages and the ageing of components in a photo-electrically sensed cell 22, Fig. 1, coded scale 10 system, one cell 22j is provided for sensing a " grey " on the scale, the output of this cell is subtracted from the outputs of the other cells whereby amplifier 42 associated with the other cells produce signals balanced about earth corresponding to opaque and transparent portions of the scale, and these balanced about earth signals have added to them a signal from a device 62 whereby they become balanced about a level at which cores in shift register 54 will just turn over.
