In a bucket wheel excavator of the type in which the wheel has an outwardly directed peripheral rim 17 to which L-shaped digging blades 18, 19 are so secured that the root portions 18 of the blades are parallel to the plane of the wheel there is provided a bladed rotor that is so positioned in relation to the wheel that as the wheel rotates the blades 28 of the rotor enter into the uppermost of the digging blades 18, 19 to sweep out any earth adhering to the blade 18, 19 and to direct said earth into a shoot 43 for discharge clear of the machine. A scraper blade is adjustably mounted at the edge of the shoot adjacent the rim of the wheel to remove earth from the wheel that has not been cleared by the. arms of the rotor.
