Abstract

899,494. Dashpots. AVIATION, MINISTER OF. July 15, 1960 [July 7, 1959], No. 23280/59. Class 108(3). [Also in Groups XIX and XXXVIII] In an instrument in which the movement of a member in response to a variable is used as a measure of the variable, and in which errors are likely to be introduced by acceleration producing spurious movements of the member, a body is attached to the member and immersed in a liquid in a container attached to the instrument the density of the liquid and the size and density of the body being such that, under acceleration the liquid transmits to the body a force equal in magnitude but opposite in direction to the inertia force on the member on acceleration. In the pressure gauge shown, movements of pressure responsive diaphragm 8 produce changes in the inductance of coil 12 by varying the position of armature 10. Attached to the armature-diaphragm assembly is rod 42 supporting a body 40, of expanded polystyrene, inside a chamber 46 full of mercury. rod 42 being free to slide in seal 44. The size of the body is chosen such that its displacement weight in the mercury is equal to the weight of the diaphragm-armature assembly, in which case the inertial force on the assembly will be cancelled by the accelerating thrust of the liquid on the body 40. The inertial forces on a spring valve may be similarly nullified.
