Abstract
899,492. Packaging. MORTON SALT CO. June 23, 1959, No. 21532/59. Class 94(1). A packet 10 comprises a sheet-like member 11 formed with a pocket 13 having a dispensing neck 14 communicating therewith and tapering so that it decreases in size in a direction away from the pocket and backer member 16 covering. the pocket and sealed to the margins 15 of the member 11, the cross-section of the neck 14 at its juncture with the pocket 13 having a height, measured perpendicular to the member 16, which approximates to that of the pocket 13 and a width less than the end wall thereof as shown. A line of perforations or scorings 17 impressed in the packet extends across the neck 14 and may be broken by folding back the corner of the packet. The neck 14 may be triangular in cross-section or may be nearly conical in shape and in modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) it extends towards one end of the packet. The member 11 may be made of polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or acetate and the member 16 of aluminium foil, lacquered paper or the same material as the member 11. Either or both members 11, 16 may be transparent, translucent or opaque. The pocket may contain a single portion of either salt or pepper. Two or more pockets, with their necks 14 pointing in different directions, may be provided in one packet. The rigidity of the packets may be increased by ribs formed therein. The packets are formed from two rolls 211, 216, of strip material, Fig. 6. A strip 111 of plastics film passes through heating means 125, over a rotating drum 126 and is caused to take the shape of depressions 127 by fluid pressure or vacuum means 128. The pocket so formed is filled by a volumetric filling device 130. A strip 116 of backing material is sealed to the strip 111 by heat and pressure applied by a belt 131 and the joined strips are cut into packets and scored across the necks 14 by dies 132.
