899,478. Aerating liquids; yeast. BECKER, G., [trading as BECKER APPARATEBAU GEB.]. March 2, 1959 [March 1, 1958], No. 7245/59. Classes 14 (1) and 14 (2). Apparatus for aerating liquids in a continuous process for obtaining fermentable products comprises a cylindrical tube 7 of ceramic or metallic frit supplied with gas through a pipe 8 and surrounded by a helical web 6 within a housing 5 through which the liquid is continuously circulated. The device may be attached to a vat 1 used for the manufacture of yeast in which the mash 3 is withdrawn from the bottom of the vat and is pumped at 9 through a cooler 13 to a sprinkler 12 at the top of the vat where it is trapped by a partition 15 and flows downwards through the aerator and returns to the bottom of the vat 1 through a pipe 11. Waste air passes upwards through a filter plate 15a and is withdrawn through a pipe 16. Nutrient solutions, auxins or other growth hormones are introduced at an inlet 17 in a separate circuit starting where yeast is continuously withdrawn through a pipe 18 leading to a separator 1811 and from which fluid is returned to the inlet 17. The apparatus may comprise a number of aerators attached to a vat and arranged for consecutive flow. Some of the used air passes through a water separator and is mixed with incoming fresh air before it is pumped to the aerators 4 through a bacteria filter. Additional quantities of used air may be pumped to the last aerators to reduce the oxygen content where the mash contains matured yeast. The apparatus permits yeast concentrations of 15 to 50% in the air free mash.
