Abstract

899,463. Boring earth. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. June 10, 1960 [June 17, 1959], No. 20841/59. Class 85. An earth drilling rig comprises two lift platforms 10, 14 mounted for independent movement along a common vertical axis, with a power swivel 18 adapted to support and rotate a drill string releasably mounted on the upper platform and means whereby it can be transferred between platforms when in positions 10<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP>. The power swivel 18 has three legs 31, each having a locating hole 33, by means of which the leg is secured in the opening 32 in the upper platform by an hydraulic actuated locking pin 34. Liquid supplied into the space 30 between the head of the pin 34 and the end of cylinder 35 serves to retract the pin against the spring 37. The legs 31 of swivel 18 are supported on flange 39 of the lower platform when the platforms come together and the transfer of weight to the lower platform automatically releases the pins 34. A make and break unit 19 is similarly supported and transferable between the platforms.
