[Also in Group XXXI] In cam steering mechanism, particularly for power-assisted steering, the cam groove 13a in, the steering wheel shaft 11 with which the follower roller 14a of an arm 14 on the crossshaft 12 engages is of low lead at its central portion and increases to either side whereby a high ratio of steering wheel movement is obtained in the straight ahead position and a lower ratio when turning, the rate of decrease of said ratio increasing from the straight ahead position to a maximum and then decreasing again to the extreme positions. Hydraulic power assistance is provided by a piston 22 coupled to the arm 14 at 20 and controlled by a valve spool 35 on the shaft 11 which is actuated by slight initial axial movement of the shaft on a steering movement thereof.
