Abstract

899,074. Refrigerating. CARRIER CORPORATION. Sept. 25, 1958 [Feb. 3, 1958], No. 30708/58. Class 29 A mixture of refrigerant vapour and foreign gases is led through pipe 18 and restriction 19 from condenser 12 to a chamber 20 in which the refrigerant vapour is condensed on an auxiliary evaporator 23 fed with refrigerant from the condenser 12 through pipe 40 and valve 41, the resulting condensate flowing to the main evaporator 15 and the foreign gases being blown off through valve 28. The operating coil of valve 28 is in series with two switches 55, 56 actuated in response to the pressure differences between the condenser and chamber 20 and the condenser and evaporator 15 respectively. When the system is idle, switches 55, 56 are made and open respectively, valve 28 being therefor closed. When the system is started, the gases and any moisture flow through pipe 18 to chamber 20 where the moisture and refrigerant condense. Reduction in the pressure of evaporator 15 closes switch 56 and therefor valve 28 opens to vent the foreign gases. This causes a reduction of pressure in chamber 20 so that switch 55 is broken and valve 28 is closed until the chamber next fills with gas. Water from the chamber 20 can be drained off through pipe 30 and refrigerant is fed to evaporator 15 through pipe 35 under the control of float valve 24. The system shown is of the compression type having a two stage compressor 10 the high pressure stage of which is connected to liquid refrigerant cooler 14. The invention may also be applied to absorption systems.
