Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0898879/IV (b)/1> and their acid addition salts wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and the preparation thereof by heating hydrazine with a reactive derivative (e.g. the halide or p-toluene-sulphonate) of the di-(b -hydroxyethyl) or di-(b -hydroxypropyl)ether of catechol, resorcinol or quinol, and, if desired, converting the hydrazine into an acid addition salt. 1, 11 - Dimethyl - 2, 21 - (p - phenylenedioxy) - di - (ethyl p - toluenesulphonate) - isomers A and B are prepared by reacting hydroquinone with propylene oxide and sodium hydroxide to yield 1, 11 - dimethyl - 2, 21 - (p - phenylenedioxy) - di - ethanol-isomers A and B, and reacting the alcohols with p-toluenesulphonyl chloride. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for the treatment of mental diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease or pain state comprise the hydrazines of the invention and an inert carrier or diluent. Tablets are prepared by the double compression dry granule method.
