Abstract

898,770. Cathode-ray oscilloscopes; radar. DECCA RECORD CO. Ltd. Nov. 18, 1950 [Sept. 22, 1960], No. 32594/60. Class 40(7). In cathode-ray tube (C.R.T.) display apparatus incorporating a circularly-polarizing filter in a hood in front of the display screen, the filter is so arranged in the hood that a viewer looking from outside the hood through the filter to the display screen, whatever his position cannot see any reflection from the surface of the filter of his own face. The filter is so shaped and positioned that any reflection from the surface of the filter seen by a view looking from outside the hood through the filter to the display screen comes from inside the hood. The invention is described as applied to a marine radar display apparatus. A hood having parallel top and bottom surfaces 12, 13 and flared side surfaces 14 is secured to C.R.T. 10 cabinet 11, the inside of the hood has a black surface, and a circularlypolarizing filter 15, which may comprise a linear polarizer together with a quarter-waveplate, is mounted in the hood. The filter is hinged to surface 12 and, when not in use, is held by a spring clip 17. A hinged door 18 is provided in surface 13 to permit of writing on the C.R.T. screen; a sliding door may be used. The sides of the hood may alternatively be flared inwardly. Transverse ribs 19 assist in preventing disturbing reflections. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 the radar display may be of the true-motion kind; a flat circularly-polarizing filter is used and consists of a thin sheet 34 of circularly-polarizing material supported on a rigid plate 35 of glass or polymethyl methacrylate resin. A transparent plate 36 is arranged above hood aperture 45, and is edge illuminated by lamps 37 to illuminate bearing markings or engravings on the top surface of the plate which is made rotatable; the plate may alternatively carry a range and bearing graticule. A chart holder and illuminating apparatus therefor is arranged in assembly 38 which is pivoted at 49 to permit of writing on plate 36. The chart is preferably made black with white markings and is mounted on rollers 40. A coloured filter 44 may be provided to bring the chart markings to the same colour as that of the C.R.T. afterglow. A correcting lens may be arranged in aperture 45 to eliminate parallax effects due to C.R.T. screen curvature.
