Abstract

Aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic amides involatile in steam are prepared from the corresponding nitriles, which are water-soluble and steam-volatile, by feeding an aqueous solution of the nitrile into an intermediate stage of a distillation column within which water is refluxing, feeding an aqueous solution of a base having a pH greater than 9 into the column or its kettle and removing the amide produced from the base of the column. Specified bases are ammonia, piperidine and hydroxides, and carbonates of the alkali metals. The examples describe the preparation of isonicotinamide from 4-cyanopyridine using (a) ammonium hydroxide, and (b) sodium hydroxide as the base; and 3-cyanopyridine is similarly hydrolysed to nicotinamide. The aqueous solution of cyanopyridine may be supplied as a solution, also comprising picoline and some ammonia, obtained in the production of the cyanopyridine by reaction of the corresponding picoline with ammonia and oxygen. Propionitrile and benzonitrile are also specified starting materials.
