898,514. Controlling jet propelled aircraft. HAMBURGER FLUGZEUGBAU G.m.b.H. Sept. 13, 1960 [Sept. 17, 1959], No. 31439/60. Class 4. An aircraft, having a plurality of jet power units 1, 2 in the tail is characterized in that the jet pipes 3, 4 of power units 1, 2 converge to a jet deflecting device which, when the jet is deflected and in the event of failure of a power unit, serves to distribute the remaining jet substantially uniformly and symmetrically. In Fig. 1, pivotable flaps 7, 8 close the lateral outlet openings 9, 10 respectively, and the efflux gases pass unobstructed in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 shows flaps 7, 8 in the position in which they deflect the gases through openings 9, 10, and flap 6 having been pivoted to the position in which it closes the thrust tube 3 in the event of failure of power unit 1. Three other embodiments are described, one having similar flaps to those shown in Fig. 1, another having pivotable outlet ducts and two central flaps, and another, in which the jet streams are not kept separate, which uses a pair of eyelids, one central flap and a variable cross-section outlet nozzle.
