Abstract

897,668. Grinding glass. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. Sept. 18, 1958, No. 29960/58. Class 60. A rubbing tool 1 for grinding or polishing glass comprises a single driving member 3 which actuates the tool so that a point thereof describes a circular path 5, and means for preventing rotation of the tool about the point. The tool is formed with guides 6 on which slide members 7. Links 9 are at one end, connected to journals 8 on the members 7 and, at the other end, mounted on pivots 10 on a fixed frame 11. A link 12 is pivotally connected to each of the links 9 or to the journals 8 on the members 7 and serves to maintain the links 9 parallel to each other during orbital movement of the tool imparted from the crank 3 which is secured to a shaft 4 and a pin 2 on the tool. The crank may be positioned at the end of the tool or be displaceable longitudinally of the tool and dynamometers used to determine the position of the crank for least lateral reaction, and consequently wear, between the guides 6 and members 7. Expansion of the tool due to heating is accommodated by relative movement between the guides and members 7.
