Abstract
896,974. Degassing metals. DORTMUNDHORDER HUTTENUNION A.G. Sept. 9, 1959 [Sept. 11, 1958], No. 30808/59. Class 72. Apparatus for the degassing of steel melts comprises a vacuum vessel, a ladle containing the melt to be treated, and a pipe extending from the bottom of the vessel into the melt, the vacuum vessel being mounted so that it can swing about a horizontal axis whereby the melt may be caused to flow between the vacuum vessel and the ladle. The vacuum vessel may also pivot about an axis remote from the centre of the vessel so that the vessel may be moved sideways and vertically. As shown, vessel 11 is supported on lever 15 pivoted at 17 and can be moved up and down by a hydraulic jack acting between points 21 and 22. The vessel is kept vertical by link 16 pivoted at 14 and 18. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2 not shown) link 16 is replaced by an hydraulic jack which allows the vessel to be tilted so that part of the floor of the vessel remote from inlet 12 may be lower than the top of the inlet, thus allowing the premelting of alloying additions in the tilted vessel or enabling a greater filling of the vessel to occur when it is in the lowered position than is possible when it is maintained level. The vessel may be elongated in the direction of its supporting levers (Fig. 3 not shown) and it may be rigidly fixed to a single lever pivoted below and to the side of the vessel (Fig. 4 not shown) so that rotation of the vessel about this pivot raises it and moves it to the side clear of the ladle 10.
