Abstract

896,853. Cutting-apparatus. LIGHT & POWER ACCESSORIES CO. Ltd., and VINE, R. O. Sept. 16, 1960 [Sept. 16, 1959], No. 31555/59. Class 31 (1). A trimming device for sheet material comprises a flat surface 1 on which the material can rest, a pair of blades movable across the surface in straight paths and in unison, and means for traversing the blades along their respective paths. The blades 5C, Fig. 2, which are movable in grooves 5D in the surface, are secured to carriers 5, 6 provided with rollers 5A, 6A, Fig. 1, movable along tracks 3, 4 spaced from the surface 1, the carriers being secured to a flexible cable 7E guided over rollers 7, 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D so that as the carrier 5 is moved along the track 3 by a handle 5G, the carrier 6 moves along the track 4 and two edges of a sheet of material placed on the surface are trimmed simultaneously. The sheet of material is clamped in position by spring-pressed members 8, 8D which have their lower surfaces covered with felt or other soft material and are connected by bellcranks 8F to rods 8G secured to a disc 9 having a linkage 10A, 10B connected to a foot pedal on a frame supporting the surface 1. The clamping member 8D has an opening 11 which is aligned with an opening 11D in a plate 11B secured to the clamping member, the openings providing a recess for the blade 5C to enter at its extreme position to meet the cut made by the blade on the carrier 6. A plate 11E, Fig. 7, is also secured to the clamping member 8D and has a screw 13D engaged in a slot 13C in a lever 13B at one end 13A pivoted to a bracket 13 on the track 4 and at the other end secured to the head of a needle 13H which engages a hole in the surface 1. The ratio of the lever is such that on operation of the foot pedal, first the needle engages the material which is positioned thereby, and then the clamping members engage the material which is held during the traverse of the blades.
