A thrashing device for a harvester having a reaping or collecting member 14, a thrashing drum 19 with concave 20, and a straw shaker 21 discharging to a baler 22, comprises a housing 25 carried on links 23, 24 driven with a shaking motion and having an inlet formed by a shaker base including a stepped solid surfaced portion 26, a sieve 31 with apertures covered against the direction of movement of the material, and another solid surfaced part 32 which extends over the inlet to a screening unit consisting of sieves 27, 28. Below the sieve 31 a deflecting plate 33 discharges material to the inlet of the screening unit from which the material passes to a screw conveyer 35, and through an elevator 16 to a sacking station 15. A blower 29 with regulator 30 blows away light parts of the material as they drop from the surface 32 to the screening unit. Other particles discharged from the unit into trough 36 are passed by conveyer 37 back to the thrashing device. The outlet of the straw shaker 21 is positioned above the solid surface 32. In a modification the deflecting plate 33 discharges on to the lower sieve of the screening unit. In further modifications the surface 32 may be followed by rakes to carry away large particles of straw and the shaker base and screening unit may be formed as two parts articulated together.
