Abstract
896,671. Cutting veneers. HARBECK, M., [trading as HEIDENREICH & HARBECK]. Jan. 31, 1961, No. 3672/61. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] Veneer slices being cut by a reciprocating knife 3 pass into the gap between a conveyer belt 15 and rollers 6, 7, 8 protruding from a guiding face 5 so that the loose engagement of veneer with the belt, which moves faster than the maximum cutting speed, stretches it slightly ; on completion of the cut, the belt and rollers are moved together to grip the veneer firmly and discharge it beyond the front end 12 of the belt. A number of belts and guiding faces are provided, adjustably spaced across the width of the pressure beam 1 and knife 3. The invention is stated to be applicable to peeling-machines, for the discontinuous pieces cut at the start of a normal peeling operation or by an eccentric peeler. The belts are driven by a motor mounted on the front of the pressure beam 1 and the end of each belt opposite the guiding face 5 runs over rollers 20, 22 carried by an arm 17 which is pivoted at 16 and is biased by a spring assembly 29 into a position retracted from the guiding face. When the cut is complete, a cam on the guide rail for the knife operates a linkage so that a rail 44 is displaced laterally and moves a cam surface 37 from beneath a roller 36 on a lever 32 mounted on each pivot 16 and the lever is pulled down by a spring 35 so that the other end 33 engages a stop on the bearing of a roller 20 and moves the belt nearer the rollers 6, 7, 8. The rollers 22 are eccentrically adjustable to alter the belt tension and the rollers 6, 7, 8 are similarly adjustable for altering the distance apart of the rollers 20 and the rollers 6, 7, 8; this distance is arranged to decrease in the direction of discharge so that the end of the veneer remote from the knife is gripped first.
