896,290. Determining relative quantities of fluid mixture constituents. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. April 8,1960, No. 29859/61. Divided out of 896,288. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. The apparatus described is the same as that in Specification 896,288 wherein the concentration of a depolarizing component of a gaseous mixture is measured in a galvanic cell wherein it is introduced in a bore of the electrode, but the claims are directed to a method of testing exchangeable polarizable electrodes used in galvanic detector cells of the type having an electric current output that is a non-linear function of the concentration, characterized by (1) inserting the electrode into a cell of known construction; (2) drawing current from the cell through an electrical circuit; (3) measuring the electric current going through the cell while passing a gaseous mixture having a known concentration of the component to be measured into contact with the electrode; (4) passing a second gaseous mixture with a different known concentration into contact with the electrode; (5) adjusting the current to a value calculated from the current in step (3) according to the non-linear function; and (6) marking the electrode with a value which is related to the adjusted current and to which the current through a cell using the electrode must be adjusted. The adjustment may be made by varying a resistor in circuit with an external opposing energy source, and one of the gas mixtures may be air. Specification 896,289 also is referred to.
