896,070. Boring earth and pile driving hammers. URBAN, S. Sept. 12, 1960, No. 31323/60. Classes 68(2) and 85. A hammer for soil test borings, well drilling and pile driving comprises a frame 10, a vertical hammer assembly 21 having a shaft 20 supported for reciprocating movement in the frame, motor means 40 on the frame for driving the hammer, a rack gear 23 supported for vertical reciprocating movement on the shaft 20, a compression spring 30 between the upper end 32 of the shaft and the upper end of the rack gear 23 yieldably resisting relative movement between the shaft 20 and the rack gear in one direction, a compression spring 31 between the lower end 33 of the shaft and the lower end of the rack yieldably resisting relative movement between the shaft 20 and the rack gear 23 in the opposite direction, the motor means drivingly engaging the rack gear and comprising a drive shaft 49 with a sector gear 48 secured thereto for rotation within a plane common to a plane containing the teeth of the rack gear 23, the sector gear having a toothed portion with teeth 50 rotatable into the path of movement of the rack gear for meshing engagement therewith during a portion of each revolution of the drive shaft, the sector gear releasing the rack gear during the other portion of each revolution of the drive shaft, whereby continuous rotation of the sector gear in a single direction is operative to raise the rack gear 23 during the first mentioned portion of each revolution of the drive shaft, this upward movement of the rack gear compressing the spring 30 to raise the shaft 20, and disengagement of the rack gear during the second mentioned portion of each revolution of the drive shaft allowing the rack gear and shaft. 20 to drop by gravity into striking engagement with a workpiece, downward movement of the rack gear relative to the shaft 20 being limited by compression of the spring 31, said compression returning the rack gear 23 partially upwardly into engagement with the toothed portion of the sector gear for elevation by the motor means.
