Abstract
895,862. Casting composite articles. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. Feb. 2, 1959 [March 25, 1958], No. 3650/59. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2). [Also in Group XI] An electric cooking vessel comprises a thin liner and an outer heat-distributing layer of aluminium anchored thereto by means separate and independent of the liner and secured thereto. In one embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4, a woven steel or stainless-steel wire mesh 33 and a wire 42 are brazed or welded to the stainsteel liner 31, the heating element 51 positioned thereon by wire clips 52, and aluminium 32 cast on. The liner has an oversize flange 48 which is cut to size after casting, the flange portion being held between the two die parts as a seal to prevent aluminium travelling to the other side of the liner. The aluminium may be built up by flame spraying instead of casting. In a further embodiment, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the heating element itself, its fixing brackets, and brackets for the leg are relied upon to anchor the cast aluminium, the surface of the liner being roughened by sand blasting or etching. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the heating element is of sinuous form and held in position for casting by wires 81a, 81b, 81c, welded to the liner 31 and which serve, with the heater and the leg brackets 38, to anchor the aluminium. In another embodiment, Fig. 10, the aluminium is cast on to a low carbon steel plate 103 with projections 105 punched therefrom and copper-brazed to the liner 31. In another example the aluminium is keyed to the liner by fragments of cast iron or steel which are copper-brazed to the stainless steel liner. In another embodiment a grill-like anchoring sheet 143, Fig. 16, having punched-out loops 146 is welded or brazed to the liner. In all embodiments the liner may be sand-blasted and a layer of aluminium sprayed on before the casting step. The anchor layers, e.g. 143, Fig. 18, may be fixed to the stainless steel liner after the latter has been cupped to shape, but preferably, to prevent distortion, the layer is brazed to a plane sheet which is then cupped. Alternatively a stainless steel sheet is partially cupped, the anchor layer brazed to it and then the cupping is completed as shown in Fig. 18.
