895,722. Portable drilling-machines. BLACK & DECKER MANUFACTURING CO. June 7, 1960, No. 19911/60. Class 83 (3). A portable power-driven rotary tool comprises a bit-holding mechanism 4 connected to a clutch 9 driven only when it is axially displaced against the pressure of a spring 18 and an axially displaceable control member 14 to lock the clutch for drilling, the control member being helically guided so that rotation thereof moves it axially. To convert the hand-drill, as shown, to a nut-running or screw-driving machine, a locking plug 20 is released by a screw 21 and the collar 14, attached to a sleeve bearing 12, is rotated, causing a screw-threaded connection 13 to advance the sleeve and allow the spring 18 to push the spindle 10 forwardly and release the clutch 9.
