Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0895709/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an ammonium, dialkylammonium, trialkanolammonium or arylammonium ion, an alkali metal ion or one equivalent of an alkaline earth metal ion and a process for their preparation which comprises reacting benzoquinone with a bisulphite of formula RHSO3. The reaction is preferably carried out in aqueous ethanol below 10 DEG C. The compounds show antihaemorrhagic activity. In an example diethylamine bisulphite is reacted in ethanol with 1 : 4-benzoquinone to give diethylammonium cyclohexadien-4-ol-1-one-4-sulphonate. The preparation of the ammonium, phenylammonium, triethanolammonium, sodium and calcium salts is specified.
