Abstract
Polymers of olefinically unsaturated compounds are modified by contact with a nitrogen fluoride of the formula <FORM:0895619/IV (a)/1> wherein X1 and X2 are each fluorine or a monovalent perfluorocarbyl radical and X3 is a divalent perfluorocarbyl radical. The treatment may be applied to shaped articles, preferably at reduced pressure and elevated temperature or the nitrogen fluoride may be absorbed on a filler, e.g. carbon black, activated alumina or molecular sieves, which is incorporated in the polymer composition at low temperatures, e.g. 30 DEG C., to exert its modifying effect on subsequent heating. Typical polymers specified are homopolymers of ethylene, propylene, styrene, methylstyrene, butadiene-1:3, isoprene, chloroprene, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, fluoride and chloride, and tetrafluoroethylene, and copolymers of ethylene with vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, carbon monoxide and other polymerizable hydrocarbons, of styrene with diene hydrocarbons, and of tetrafluoroethylene or 1,1-difluoroethylene with hexafluoropropylene. The principal benefit claimed for the treatment is increase in melting point and/or decrease in solubility of the polymer. U.S.A. Specification 2,519,983 is referred to.
