[Also in Group XXXIX] A tape gramophone records by means of a stylus S, which embosses a groove in a tape T supported by a grooved anvil 26 which also forms a driving capstan. A playback pickup P is mounted for alternate use with a recording head R on a common arm H, the various functions being controlled by a knob D 1 . The tape carries a plurality of tracks recorded in alternate directions and prerecorded tapes with other groove forms can be played, the required track being selected by movable guide - posts 24. To provide for volume expansion or compression, the recording stylus has two driving- coils, one fed with the A.F. currents, the other coil, 81a, fed with a D.C. of level proportional to the recording A.F., and is used with a capacitative pick-up, Fig. 20, with an output level responsive to the mean deviation of a record track 73 or 74 from the median line. The styli are of generally oval shape for optimal tap usage.
