895,263. Cleaning metals. BETEILIGUNGSUND PATENTVERWALTUNGS GESELLSCHAFT. June 17, 1960 [June 18, 1959], No. 21458/60. Class 82(2). [Also in Group XXXV] Strip metal, e.g. steel, is de-scaled in an apparatus which comprises at least one acid immersion or acid spraying bath in which the strip hangs in a loop, driving means for the strip disposed either in advance of or beyond the bath, and a detector responsive to interception by the loop of a beam of light or radiation from radioactive material, or responsive to modification by the loop of an electric or magnetic field, for determining when the loop has descended into the bath to a predetermined level. As shown, strip 1 runs vertically through scale-breaker 2, driving rolls 4, acid immersion baths 5, 6, water spray section 22 and feed rollers 21. The depth of the loop in baths 5, 6 is determined by photocells 17-20 associated with light sources 16, and the photocells control the speed of rollers 4, 21 so as to maintain the lengths of the loops constant and hence the duration of immersion of the strip. Baths 5, 6 are in communication via conduit 26 and fresh or regenerated acid is fed to bath 6 through inlet 27.
