Abstract

895,171. Control of D.C. motors; controllers. CLARK EQUIPMENT CO. May 9, 1960 [June 8, 1959], No. 19808/61. Divided out of 895,168. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (3). The subject-matter of this Specification is identical with that described in Specification 895,168, but the claims relate to an industrial truck of the stand-up type having a pair of laterally-spaced traction wheels supporting one end of the truck, an electric traction motor associated with each wheel for driving same and an operator station located adjacent said wheels, a control system for said traction motors including a hand-operated control member located at the operator station and rotatable from a neutral position to control the speed of said traction motors, traction motor switching control means operatively connected to the hand-operated control member for controlling a preselected regime of traction motor speed as a function of the position of the hand-operated control-member out of the neutral position, switch means operatively connected in circuit with said traction motors and controlled by said speed control means and first and second battery means for energizing said traction motors, said circuit switch means being controlled to effect alternately at the selection of the operator series motor operation across said first battery means only, series motor operation across both said battery means, and parallel motor operation across both said battery means. Rectifiers maintain the current through the traction motors during the change-over from series to parallel. The return of the control member to the neutral position causes the traction motors to be connected initially to the other part of the battery during the next cycle of motor operation, so avoiding unequal discharge of the battery. When the motors are being accelerated, resistance is momentarily reintroduced into circuit to reduce current peaks. Specifications 818,457, 876,286, 895,170 and 895,172 also are referred to.
