Abstract

894,929. Lathes. COMMISSARIAT A. L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 24, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957; Jan. 22, 1958], No. 23887/58. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] A remotely controlled device for cutting open the end of a tubular container 1 containing products which have been irradiated by placing the container in a nuclear reactor comprises, Fig. 1, a platform 3 on which the container 1 is placed by means of tongs, the height of the platform being adjustable by a horizontal rack 4 engaging one end of a double pinion 5 having a horizontal axis, the other end of the pinion engaging a vertical rack 6 secured to the platform. The container is gripped by jaws 7 carried by radially-slidable members 9 having teeth 10 co-operating with helical ribs formed on a bevel gear-wheel 12, the wheel 12 being rotatable about the axis of the container by a pinion (Fig. 2, not shown). The cutting tool 2 is carried by a holder 29 slidable along a radius of a worm-wheel 17 by which the holder is supported. The wheel 17 is rotated about a fixed spindle 19 by a worm 16 and carries a planetary gear train 20-26 driven by a pinion 27 secured to the spindle 19. The final gear 26 drives a spiral-shaped cam 28 against which the holder 19 is urged by a spring 30 whereby on rotation of the worm 16 the tool 2 moves round the container and slowly penetrates thereinto. The driving means (not shown) for the rack 4, wheel 12 and worm 16 are remotely controlled by means (not shown) separated from the cutting device by a screen such as a lead wall. In a modified apparatus to facilitate emptying the contents of the container when it has been opened, Fig. 3, the device is mounted on a framework 36 pivotal about an axis 37 by a motor 40 operating through gears 41-44. The container 1 is introduced, through a passage 46 and held by slidable jaws 7 operated by electromagnets 33, 35. During a cutting operation the framework is tilted so that the passage 46 occupies the position 46<SP>1</SP> and the head 47 cut off from the container is led by slopes 48, 49 into a tank 50. A nozzle 51 slidable through the centre of the wheel 17 is then moved up to the container by energizing a magnet 53, 54 and the framework 36 tilted in the reverse direction so that the nozzle takes up the position 51<SP>1</SP>, whereupon the container contents are emptied through the nozzle 51 into a tank 55.
