A liquid applicator comprises a container 11, Fig. 1, for liquid to be applied, a resilient flanged cup 23 fitting in the container through a walled opening 17 with the flanged open end facing upwardly and with the flange 25 above the wall 15, the cup bottom having an opening 31, Fig. 4, for passage of liquid to the cup from the container, an absorbent material 35 in the cup, a cover 37 through which liquid may pass to a surface to which it is to be applied, and a removable closure 45 including means, e.g. an annular bend 49 for pressing the flange 25 tightly against the top of the wall 15 and for holding the flange 25 against the container and the closure in liquidtight engagement when the applicator is not in use. The applicator pad, Fig. 4, is formed by the cup 23 of resilient plastic, e.g. polyethylene, inside of which is the absorbent material 35 of resilient open-celled plastic foam sponge, e.g. polyurethane foam. On top of the sponge 35 is the cover 37 of synthetic thermoplastic filaments, e.g. polyethylene, having a multiplicity of openings 39 and held in place by the sponge pressing the cover outwardly against the sides of the cup. In another embodiment the cover is heat-sealed to the flange 25 of the cup.
