Abstract

894,484. Portable containers. CONTAINER CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Oct. 27, 1960 [Nov. 9, 1959], No. 36886/60. Class 66. A spirally wound container is formed by winding on to a mandrel 22 inner and outer wall plies 19, 20 which overlap and are adhesively bonded together except where a tear tape 21 prevents their adhesion, the tape 21 being wound simultaneously with the plies 19, 20 and overlying a butt joint between adjacent edges of the ply 19, and the ply 20 being cut at 23 to render a pull tab 16, attached to the tape 21, accessible from the exterior. A patch 24 is bonded between the plies 19, 20 in order to strengthen the area under the pull tab. A liner 18 of metallic foil is bonded to the inner side of the ply 19; and a label ply 13 which is also cut to form the tab 16, is bonded to the exterior of the ply 20. The ply 19 may be of chipboard and the ply 20 of Kraft paper. When the container body is formed, a metal base 11 is crimped on after which the container is filled, e.g. with baking dough, and a cap 12 crimped on the other end. A coloured spot 15 marks the position of the pulling tab; and, when the tear tape is pulled off, the inner ply 19 and liner 18 may be broken by twisting the end closures 11, 12 in opposite directions.
