Abstract

894,219. Winches. AHLBIN, F. E. July 5, 1960 [July 16, 1959], No. 23415/60. Class 78(5). A cable 38 (Fig. 2) to be spirally wound on to the reel 13 of a power-driven winch is guided by a device comprising an elongated flexible rodlike spring element 44 which extends parallel to the axis of the core barrel 14 of the reel and is connected at its ends, which are adjacent to the cable confining end flanges 15 of the reel, to a pair of transversely extending independently spring-biased support arms 45 (Fig. 7). The element 44, the arms 45 and spring biasing means 46 constitute a continuous generally U-shaped spring member whose free ends 47 may be hooked or otherwise engaged with fixed frame members such as the side plates 11 which carry the reel bearings 16, the biasing means 46 being a coil which encircles a cross-tie 34. A second guide comprising like members 144, 145, 146 may act as shown on the diametrically opposite parts of the cable turns. In use the ends of each element 44 or 144 are raised from the drum alternately as consecutive cable layers are built up and during the formation of each layer (see Fig. 8) the element 44 bridges between the last laid cable turn 52 and the turn 51 at the remote end of the reel with the turn 52 resiliently urged radially toward the drum and laterally towards the previously laid turns in the same layer 143. The above guiding device is embodied in a winch which is driven by a motor 27 anchored by straps 28 to the fixed framework, the anchoring means including at least one peg 35 having a cam surface 61 which overhangs the reel adjacent to an end flange 15 thereof to prevent the cable overrunning the said flange when the reel is full. The shaft 26 of the motor drives the reel shaft 17 through the gearing shown in Fig. 7. The wheel 18 of this gearing is permanently braked, to prevent slip, by the spring device 56 comprising the parts 57, 58, 57 shown in Fig. 10, which is attached as shown to a supporting surface 55 carried by one of the side members 11.
