Abstract
1,188,732. Launching aircraft. E. W. BLISS CO. 30 Jan., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 4612/68. Heading B7G. An aircraft launching apparatus comprises a pair of aircraft engaging means (e.g. wheeled dollies 10, 12) each having at one end a separate flexible tension member (e.g. a flat woven belt of Nylon 16, 18) connected to a separate winding means (e.g. a reel 24, 28), there being a power means (e.g. a turbine engine 32) and means (e.g. clutches 36, 38) for selectively driving the winding means to wind on the corresponding tension member, the aircraft engaging means being interconnected (e.g. by a wire or cable 40) so that as one tension member is wound in, the other is unwound. Each reel 24, 28 may have a brake 43, 46 to stop the dollies 10, 12 at the end of a launch, and also to keep the belts 16, 18 and cable 40 taut. Aircraft may be launched from the two dollies alternately, without an intervening delay to return a dolly to a ready-for-launch position. Aircraft may be launched in either direction. The members 16, 18 and 40 may comprise a single woven belt of Nylon. Alternatively, each woven belt 16, 18 may be connected to its respective dolly 12, 10 by a length of wire rope or cable similar to cable 40.
