Abstract

A stabilized metal degreasing composition comprises (a) a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent, particularly tri- or per-chlorethylene or methyl chloroform, and (b) 0,01-2% by weight of (a) of a condensation product of formaldehyde or acetaldehyde with a primary amine containing 1-3 carbon atoms (i.e. an alkyl-substituted hexahydrotriazine). Such condensates may be produced in situ by condensing the aldehyde and amine together in the solvent at below 45 DEG C. in equimolecular proportions and in such amounts that the concentrate obtained contains 10-50 g. of condensate per 100 ml. solvent, and thereafter diluting the concentrate with solvent to a condensate concentration of 0,01-2% by weight of the solvent.ALSO:Chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, particularly tri- or per-chlorethylene or methyl chloroform, are stabilized by the incorporation of 0.01%-2% by weight of the solvent of a condensation product of formaldehyde or acetaldehyde with a primary amine containing 1-3 carbon atoms (i.e. an alkyl-substituted hexahydrotriazine). Such condensates may be produced in situ by condensing the aldehyde and amine in equimolecular proportions in the solvent at below 45 DEG C. in such amounts that the concentrate obtained contains 10g.-50g. of condensate per 100 ml. solvent, and thereafter diluting the concentrate with solvent to a condensate concentration of 0.01%-2% by weight of the solvent. In Example 1, equimolar amounts of 40% formaldehyde solution and isopropylamine are stirred together on an ice bath for 1 hour after which the upper condensate layer is separated, dried over potassium carbonate and stripped at 15 mm. pressure and 110 DEG C., the 1 : 3 : 5-triisopropyl hexahydrotriazine obtained being washed with water and dried again over potassium carbonate. In Example 2, 1 mol amine (or an aqueous solution containing 1 mol) is added to 50 ml. trichloroethylene containing 1 mol aldehyde (or an aqueous solution containing 1 mol) with stirring at below 45 DEG C. After 1 hour the aqueous layer is separated and extracted with trichlorethylene, the extracts being combined with the condensate layer. The condensate solutions so obtained are those derived from (a) formaldehyde and ethylamine, (b) formaldehyde and methylamine, (c) formaldehyde and isopropylamine, and (d) acetaldehyde and ethylamine.
