Abstract

Selenium impurities contaminating 1-dehydro-17a -methyl-testosterone which has been obtained by dehydrogenating 17a -methyl-testosterone with a selenium compound having a dehydrogenating action are removed by treating the crude 1-dehydro-compound with hydrogen peroxide, separating the resulting acidic fraction from the neutral fraction, treating the neutral fraction with an adsorbent and recovering the purified 1-dehydro-compound from the neutral fraction. Advantageously the crude 1-dehydro-compound, obtained, for example, by a dehydrogenation process using selenium dioxide or selenious acid, is dissolved in a solvent such as acetic acid and treated with a 30% aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide at room temperature, the product, obtained for example by precipitation with water and filtration, is dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. toluene or ethyl acetate, and extracted with a aqueous alkaline reagent, such as sodium carbonate, the neutral fraction remaining in solution in the organic solvent is then treated with an adsorbent, such as aluminium oxide, for example by passing the solution through a column of the adsorbent or by adding adsorbent to the solution and filtering off the solid material, and the 1-dehydro compound is then recovered from the solvent by, for example, evaporating the solution and recrystallising the residue. An example is given.
