Abstract

893,797. Rolling. TUBES Ltd. -May 25, 1959 [June 4, 1958], No. 17796/58. Class 83 (4). Metal stock is reduced by a pair of pilger rolls mounted on a reciprocating carriage, both axial and angular movement being imparted to the stock at the end of each forward and each backward stroke of the carriage. Tube or rod is reduced by rolls 20, 21 mounted in a carriage 11 reciprocable on wheels 12 in a housing having tracks 13. A rack and pinion 24, 23 drives the roll 21 directly and the roll 22 through gearing 25, the rolls 21, 22 having oscillating motion during the reciprocations of the carriage. The carriage 11 is driven by a motor through a crank 17, connecting-rod 16, rocker arm 15 and a reciprocating link 14. At the end of each stroke of the carriage a part of increased depth at the end of tapered grooves 20a, 21a on the periphery of each roll lies adjacent the work so that there is no contact between the roll and work, thus permitting the work to be fed and rotated. The work is fed by a cross-head 27 having jaws 28 for gripping the stock, the crosshead being advanced by the rotation of an axially-captive nut 30 engaging with a threaded rod 29 attached to the cross-head. The nut 30 is rotated by a fluid-actuated motor 36 through gearing 38, 39, 40 (Fig. 5, not shown). Rotation of the work is effected by a fluid-actuated motor 37 driving through gearing 41, 42 a splined shaft 32 and gearing 33, 34, 35 in the cross-head 27 to rotate the jaws 28 and the work. When a tube 22 is reduced a mandrel 26 is supported by a rod 26a fixed in a rotatable support, the mandrel being rotated by the motor 37 through gearing 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 and a clutch 46. The motors 36, 37 are controlled from a driven cam-shaft so that the work is intermittently advanced and rotated at the end of each stroke of the carriage 11, the rotation being through an angle of less than 90 degrees. Jaws 47 operated through a linkage by a pneumatic cylinder 48 lightly grip the work leaving the rolls so as to support the work and permit longitudinal feed by the succeeding blank. A fluid-actuated motor 50 rotates the jaws 47 in a manner similar to that of the jaws 28.
