Abstract

An infra-red transparent wall for an infra-red radiating heating element consists essentially of a sintered alumina or titanium oxide in grains smaller than 0,1 microns. In Example 1, a tube for housing a metal heating resistance is formed from gamma-alumina of mean grain size 0,02 to 0,03 microns by mixing with a mixture of turpentine oil and ceresine, extruding to form a tube, and sintering at 1100 DEG -1200 DEG C., the gamma-alumina being changed into alpha-alumina. The tube is sprayed with an aqueous suspension of an enamel powder containing at least 40% Pb, at least 20% SiO2, about 10% BrO3, and about 20% SnO and Al2O3, dried and fired at 500-1000 DEG C. The heater resistance is then inserted. In Example 2, a wall to be placed in front of an infra-red energy source consisting of a perforated porous ceramic refractory plate forming a gas burner is prepared by pressing a mixture of gamma-alumina and polyvinyl alcohol, sintering at 1100-1200 DEG C., and preferably enamelling.
