Abstract

The invention comprises (1) a process for preparing 2-fluoro- or 6-fluoro-3-oxo-D 1,4-steroids of the androstane and pregnane series which comprises treating the corresponding 2-fluoro-or 6-fluoro-3-oxo-D 4-steroid with a 2,3-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone which may be additionally substituted with one or two chlorine atoms in an inert solvent; and (2) the individual steroids 6a - fluoropregna - 1, 4 - diene - 3, 20 - dione; 17b - acetoxy - 2 - fluoroandrosta - 1, 4 - dien - 3 - one; 2 - fluoro - 17b - hydroxy - 17a - methyl - androsta - 1, 4 - dien - 3 - one; and 2 - fluoro - prednisolone acetate. Examples describe the preparation of these steroids and of 6a -fluoro-17b -hydroxy-17a -methylandrosta-1,4-dien-3-one; 17a - acetoxy - 6a - fluoropregna - 1, 4 - diene - 3,20-dione; 6a -fluoroprednisone and the acetate thereof, and the corresponding prednisolone compounds; 6a ,9a -difluoroprednisolone; and 6a ,-9a - difluoro - 11b , 17a - dihydroxy - pregna - 1, 4 - diene-3,20-dione.
