In guide apparatus for a centrifugal blower or pump comprising guide-ducts in two housing parts divided in a plane normal to the impeller axis, the guide ducts surrounding the impeller to receive fluid therefrom and each having a partly axially curved part directing the fluid into a laterally offset chamber or chambers, the curved part of each guide duct is open along the outer periphery of the housing parts, the openings being closed by a containing-wall enclosing the housing parts. In the singlestage blower shown, the impeller 1 discharges through a number of ducts 6 to a laterally offset volute 3. The ducts 6 are formed in casing parts 2, 5 divided in a plane normal to the impeller axis, each duct comprising a curved inlet part 6a, a straight diffuser part 6b and a curved diffuser part 6c. The parts 6c are curved axially to extend through the casing part 2 to join the volute 3 and are open along the outer periphery of the casing parts 2, 5, the openings being closed by a cylindrical outer wall 4a. The volute 3 may be laterally offset in the opposite direction to that shown so as to surround the inlet of the blower. The plane of division between the casing parts 2 and 5 may be offset so that the ducts 6 are unequally divided between the casing parts. Each duct 6 may be situated in a plane oblique to the impeller axis. The blower may be of multi-stage type, with the ducts 6 of the last stage opening into a volute and the ducts 6 of the other stages opening into interstage reversing passages.
