Abstract

Scouring compositions suitable for removing stains from unglazed porcelain surfaces comprise a water-soluble monopersulphate and a water-soluble chloride, the cation of which is compatible (i.e. does not react or precipitate) with the monopersulphate. Specified chlorides are the alkali and alkaline-earth metal chlorides and magnesium and ammonium chlorides, and specified monopersulphates are the alkali-metal monopersulphates and ammonium, calcium, barium, zinc and aluminium monopersulphates. The preferred monopersulphate obtained is by reacting a mixture of monopersulphuric and sulphuric acids with potassium carbonate or hydroxide and drying the resulting mixture, the acids being in the proportions to give KHSO5: KHSO4: K2SO4 in molar proportions of about 2:1:1. The composition may be prepared by intimately mixing the solid, water-soluble monopersulphate and the solid, water-soluble chloride in their anhydrous forms in the ratio of chloride ion (reckoned as NaCl) to active oxygen between 1:100 and 20:1. The monopersulphate content of the solid composition is preferably equivalent to 0,05-5% of active oxygen based on the total weight of the composition. A suitable abrasive filler for use in the composition comprises about 90% of ground quartz flour, 5% of sodium tripolyphosphate, 3% of a sodium alkaryl sulphonate detergent and a perfume, the remainder being sodium sulphate. Specifications 428,142, 428,148 and 893,440 are referred to.ALSO:A composition having oxidising properties and suitable for bleaching textiles comprises a water-soluble monopersulphate and a watersoluble chloride, the cation of which is compatible (i.e. does not react or precipitate) with the monopersulphate. Specified chlorides are the alkali and alkaline-earth metal chlorides and magnesium and ammonium chlorides, and specified monopersulphates are the alkali-metal monopersulphates and ammonium, calcium, barium, zinc and aluminium monopersulphates. The preferred monopersulphate is obtained by reacting a mixture of monopersulphuric and sulphuric acids with potassium carbonate or hydroxide and drying the resulting mixture, the acids being in the proportions to give KHSO5: KHSO4: K2SO4 in molar proportions of about 2 : 1 : 1. The composition may be prepared by intimately mixing the solid, water-soluble monopersulphate and the solid, water-soluble chloride in their anhydrous forms in the ratio of chloride ion (reckoned as NaCl) to active oxygen between 1 : 100 and 20 : 1. The monopersulphate content of the solid composition is preferably equivalent to 0.05%-5% of active oxygen, based on the total weight of the composition. When dissolved in water the composition preferably contains a concentration of monopersulphate corresponding to 50-700 p.p.m. of active oxygen and of chloride ion of at least 5 p.p.m. Specifications 428,142, 428,148 and 893,440 are referred to.ALSO:A composition having oxidizing and anti-bacterial properties which, in its anhydrous form, may be used as a scouring composition for removing stains from unglazed porcelain surfaces and, in aqueous solution, may be used for bleaching textiles, comprises a water-soluble monopersulphate and a water-soluble chloride, the cation of which is compatible (i.e. does not react or precipitate) with the monopersulphate. Specified chlorides are the alkali and alkaline-earth metal chlorides and magnesium and ammonium chlorides, and specified monopersulphates are the alkali metal monopersulphates and ammonium, calcium, barium, zinc and aluminium monopersulphates.
