Abstract

Diperisophthalic acid, stabilized by the addition of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an acid having a dissociation constant at 25 DEG C. of at least 1 x 10-3 for its first hydrogen atom, may be used in detergent compositions by adding to the stabilized composition alkyl or aralkyl sulphates and sulphonates, e.g. sodium dodecyl sulphate and alkali metal silicates. Specified stabilizing salts are sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, magnesium and ammonium sulphates or bisulphates; sodium, magnesium and calcium nitrates and the corresponding pyro and polyphosphates.ALSO:Diperisophthalic acid is stabilized by adding thereto an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an acid having a dissociation constant at 25 DEG C. for its first hydrogen of at least 1 x 10-3, the salts added being inert to di-perisophthalic acid. Preferably the dissociation constant is at least 1 x 10-2 and specified salts added are sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium, magnesium and ammonium sulphates or bisulphates; sodium, magnesium and calcium nitrates and the corresponding pyro or polyphosphates. The compositions have a pH not exceeding 8 and preferably contain at least one-third by weight of the stabilizing salt.ALSO:Compositions, useful as bleaching agents, comprise diperisophthalic acid stabilised by an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an acid having a dissociation constant at 25 DEG C for its first hydrogen if at least 1x10-3. Specified salts added are sodium, potassium lithium, calcium magnesium and ammonium sulphates or bisulphates; sodium, magnesium and calcium nitrates and the corresponding pyro and polyphosphates. The compositions may also contain alkyl and aralkyl sulphates and sulphonates and alkali metal silicates.
