Abstract

893,158. Spinning yarns. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958(2)], No. 42688/59. Class 120(3) [Also in Group XXV] A method of making an extensible and flexible yarn, plied yarn or cable from continuous filaments of high modulus material such as glass, quartz, synthetic resins, high tenacity regenerated cellulose, comprises the steps (not necessarily sequential) of gathering filaments into a loose strand, impregnating with a liquid composition which may be cured or set to form a low modulus cushioning material such as natural or synthetic rubber or elastomeric plastics, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, wherein the filaments are spaced from each other thereby, curing or setting the composition, twisting one or more strands into a yarn &c. in which any one component (including the cushioning material coating one yarn) is twisted oppositely to a neighbouring component so that the yarn &c. has an approximately balanced structure. The impregnating and coating may be effected as a direct continuation of the filament forming process. One impregnated, coated and cured strand may be twisted into a wild yarn and plied with a similar but oppositely twisted wild yarn. The wild yarn may be such that, when released, it will partly untwist until the torque of the untwisting filaments is balanced by the countertorque of the cushioning material: the yarn may be partially or wholly untwisted leaving a residual twisting torque in the surrounding cushioning material. As shown, a strand 14 from a package 16 of sized, parallel, continuous glass filaments (or a twisted yarn) passes over a pulley 23 to break interbonding due to the size and through a coating and impregnating bath of rubber latex in a bath 21, a curing oven 25 to set the rubber, a mound 30 of a coating powder such as zinc stearate, corn starch or talc (which eliminates tackiness) on an oscillating table 31, between driven feed rollers 36, and is wound on a rotating ring-twister bobbin 33: the twist imparted at this stage may oppose any initial twist in the yarn. Composite yarns &c. may include strands or (staple) yarns of natural fibres such as cotton, or synthetic fibres such as nylon or polyethylene terephthalate, or conventional glass fibre strands.
