Abstract

893,119. Road surfacing machines. BARBER-GREENE CO. March 7, 1960 [Sept. 4, 1959], No. 8008/60. Class 107 [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXII] A machine for depositing road surfacing material and for finishing the road surface comprises a traction unit 10, a hopper 13, longitudinal conveyers 44 which move the surfacing material to the rear of the hopper, a screw conveyer 79 which spreads the deposited material and a strike-off plate and tamper unit 19 for finishing the road surface. The hopper, which extends to the full length of the machine, is pivotally attached to the main frame 11 at pivot pins 15 and is supported at its forward end by chains 40 depending from the main frame. The machine frame is stabilized about its point of attachment 24 to the traction elements, each comprising two wheels 12, by a spring suspension arrangement (see Group XXXII) and an auxiliary load bearing unit 25 is provided to prevent overload of the suspension arrangement as the frame pivots about attachment point 24 when the hopper is fully loaded with surfacing material. Discharge from the hopper is controlled by three vertically sliding doors spaced across the rear of the hopper, Fig. 6 (not shown) which are manually controlled by the machine operator. Levelling arms 20, which are connected to the strike off plate and tamper unit 19, are pivotally attached intermediate the ends of auxiliary arms 23 which extend forwardly between pivots 24 and the auxiliary load bearing unit 25 whereby variations in grade in advance of the unit 19 are compensated for. For transportation the unit 19 and the load bearing unit 25 are lifted out of contact with the ground by hydraulic jacks 30 and 33 respectively. Side units 80 of the hopper may be tilted by jacks 81 to discharge their contents on to conveyers 44.
