A machine for distributing and levelling road material has a transporter unit 31 to one side of which is attached a levelling unit comprising a cantilever support for a telescopic strike-off member 86,186 and a side form plate 84 connected to the outer strike-off member 186. The transporter unit 31 comprises a self-propelled frame 33 having a hopper 55 discharging on to a transverse belt conveyor 65 at the forward end, such that material may be fed to the side of the machine in advance of a telescopic screw spreader 85. The screw spreader 85 and strikeoff 86, are carried, with relative horizontal and vertical bolting adjustment, by a plate 87 (Fig. 7) at the inboard side and by the side form plate 84 at the outboard side. The strike-off 86 is stayed back to the frame 33 through telescopic struts 121, 122 pivoted to a vertically adjustable guide sleeve and rod structure 130, a similar structure 90 permits vertical adjustment of the plate 87. In addition the plate 87 may be tilted to provide the required degree of camber to the surface being levelled by the use of an adjusting screw 105. Removable pin connections allow lifting or removal of the levelling unit, to clear obstructions or for transport, by a hoist 50. Vertical adjustment of the levelling unit is provided by hydraulic jacks 115, 145 and similar jacks provide telescopic adjustment of the strike-off member 86 and transverse movement of the conveyor 65 which latter may be provided with a deflector shoot. The jacks and the hydraulic motors for the conveyor and the screw are powered by an engine driven pump 42 and controlled from a console 43.
