Abstract
893,038. Indicating liquid levels. VERMOHLEN, M. A. Aug. 13. 1959 [Aug. 18, 1958], No. 27751/59. Class 123(1). A simple and reliable low-level signalling apparatus for pressure vessels such as a boiler 1 comprises a pipe 2 which is attached externally to the boiler at a level corresponding to the lowest permissable water level and which is sealed at its upper end by a detachable housing 3 which is made of non-magnetic material and accommodates a bimetallic rod 4 which initiates the warning signal. As shown in Fig. 1 the bimetallic rod 4, mounted at its lower end on a housing cross piece 5, carries, at its upper end adjacent the top wall of the housing 3, a permanent magnet 6 which influences the moving contact 7<SP>1</SP> of an electric switch having a fixed contact 7. At normal level water partially or completely fills the pipe 2 and the bimetallic rod 4 takes up a vertical position as shown. A sudden rise in the temperature, due to the introduction of steam into the pipe 2 when the water level falls below the permissable level, causes the bimetallic rod 4 to deflect sharply in the direction of the arrow F the magnet 6 urging the movable contact 7 into engagement with the fixed contact 7 to complete the circuit for the signalling and controlling apparatus. In a modification, Fig. 3 not shown, a bimetallic rod, on a contact thermometer, is housed in a coaxial recess which extends downwardly within, and from the upper end of, the housing 3.
